Teens and Technology

Being a parent of a teenager is hard, especially when it comes to technology. On Monday, middle and high school students in the Marshall area will get a first-hand on how social media affects their daily life and what the dangers are from educator Dave Eisenmann.

Dave Eisemann has spent the last five years talking to schools across the state about technology safety issues especially when it comes to social media.

Marshall High School Principal Brian Jones told the Marshall Independent, that in this day and age, school districts can't expect kids to unplug technology, but they can teach students how to use it responsibly.

Eisemann will also be giving a presentation to parents called Cyber Safety: Catching Up with High-Tech Kids. This presentation will talk about how parents can have an open dialogue with their kids about technology and how parents play a significant role in today's high-tech world. This presentation will take place Monday night at 7 P-M in the Marshall Middle School Theater.

MNsure Deadline Approaches

Minnesotans have only two days to sign up for MNsure, and so far enrollement has been increasing. 

Bring Me the News reports that it has now enrolled more than 152,000 people on the exchange. MNsure Interim Director Scott Leitz told the Associated Press that it will take more time for officials to say how many previously uninsured people have obtained coverage for the first time.

Uh, let me take a selfie......

The Chainsmokers hit single #Selfie has been rocking the airwaves and the Billboard Top 100 for the last couple of months. Since the word "selfie" has become the new word everyone's been talking about, we at KSSU-TV wanted to create our own "selfie" that inspired Ellen DeGeneres and Jimmy Kimmel.

Since the picture was posted on Tuesday, it's gotten so many "likes" and "shares" on Facebook, as well as 16 retweets and 14 favorites on Twitter. 

So, what are you waiting for? Gather your friends and take a selfie during this nice beautiful weekend we are having and who knows maybe you'll might get so many retweets and shares on social media.

Earthquake Shakes Up Los Angeles

Earlier this morning, a 4.4 magnitude earthquake has struck just west of Los Angeles according to CNN.

According to the U.S.Geographical Survey, the earthquake happened around 6:25 this morning and was centered around 6 miles north-northwest of Westwood and about 15 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.\

Summit League Tournament: SDSU and USD Semi-Finals Preview

While the SMSU Men's and Women's Basketball teams are calling it good for the year, March Madness is just getting started.

 The South Dakota State University Men's and Women's Basketball Teams and the University of South Dakota Women's Basketball Team participated in this past weekend's Summit League Tournament in Sioux Falls. The winners of both the Men's and Women's Championship Games will head on to the Big Dance later this month.

However, today will be a battle of the Jackrabbits and the Coyotes as the Number 1 seeded SDSU and the 4th seeded USD women will go head to head as the winner of this game will go straight to the finals and play against the winner of the Denver Pioneers vs. the Indiana University-Purdue Jaguars tomorrow afternoon.

On the Men's side, the Number 3 seeded SDSU will take on the Number 2 seeded Fort Wayne Mastodons tonight at 8:30 p.m. at the Sioux Falls Arena.

The women's game will be tipping off shortly and both games will air on Midco Sports Net.

Marshall Fire Update

Last week, Rob and Shelly Brooks lost everything in last Monday morning's devastating house fire home on North Seventh Street. Marshall Fire Chief Marc Klaith told the Marshall Independent that they were able to get out of their home and had no injuries. However, there is still significant damage inside their home and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Both Rob and Shelly are employees at the Hy-Vee in Marshall and according to the Marshall Hy-Vee's Facebook page, you can still donate items such as toiletries, clothing, food, or monetary donations. These donations can be dropped off at the Customer Service desk inside the Marshall Hy-Vee.

Ellen DeGeneres Record-Breaking Selfie

Selfie: A picture of you and your friends that is worth a thousand words. The 2013 word of the year is staying strong in 2014. At Sunday night's Oscars, Ellen DeGeneres along with Meryl Streep, Bradley Cooper, and Jennifer Lawrence all took part in a selfie that became a instant hit.

TV Guide reports that after the infamous selfie was posted to Twitter 30 minutes later, it was retweeted over 400, 000 times that night and it is now the most retweeted image of all time since President Obama's re-election tweet of 778,424 retweets in 2012.

Sunday's event also drew a crowd of viewers as 43 million viewers tuned into the most-watched Oscars since 2004. It was also the most-watched entertainment program since Friends' series finale in 2004 as well. 

Gravity and 12 Years a Slave Dominate the Oscars

The glitz, glamour, and the stars all came out at Sunday night's  Oscars celebration. While it was all fun and excitement to see what the stars were wearing, the real winners were the movies that took home the most awards.

Gravity which took home seven awards including Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, and Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron. This is Cuaron's first Oscar and he is also the first Latino to win this award.

Unfortunately, 12 Years a Slave beated out Gravity in Best Picture.  12 Years a Slave also won Best Adapted Screenplay (John Ridley), and Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong'o). The film was produced by Brad Pitt and directed by Steven McQueen who was the first African American filmmaker to win this award.

TV Guide also reports that the other winners of Sunday night's event were Dallas Buyer's Clubs: Matthew McConaughey (Best Lead Actor) and Jared Leto (Best Supporting Actor as well as Disney's Frozen taking home two awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for Let it Go.
